Nonprofits: How to Engage with the Black Funders Network of the Bay Area

The Black Funders Network of the Bay Area (BFN) empowers Black philanthropic professionals and fosters stronger connections among philanthropy leaders throughout the Bay Area.

What is the Black Funders Network?

The Black Funders Network of the Bay Area is a nonprofit philanthropic affinity group. BFN is not a grantmaking institution, and we do not provide funding to nonprofits. Our events are also not intended as spaces for grant-seeking or funding inquiries. Instead, we serve as a bridge between funders and BLOs, advocating for philanthropy that uplifts Black communities and fosters equitable relationships. All of our programs and events are exclusively for members unless otherwise stated.

Resources for Nonprofits

We understand the vital role that BLOs play in our communities and are committed to supporting their efforts. While nonprofits are only eligible for BFN membership if they specifically serve philanthropic professionals, there are still meaningful ways to connect with our work and benefit from our resources. We’ve compiled:

These resources are free and available to you on our website. We encourage you to use them as a starting point for your funding journey.

Building Bridges, Not Barriers

BFN is actively working to develop programming that convenes BLOs and funders for meaningful, transformative conversations. We aim to foster deep connections rooted in relationships and collective care while addressing philanthropy’s historic power dynamics. Our vision for the future includes:

  1. Co-Creating a Series with BLOs and Funders: Together, we aim to shift how philanthropy engages with Black communities, centering the lived experiences and leadership of BLOs.

  2. Mitigating Power Dynamics: We are committed to reshaping philanthropy to prioritize solidarity and trust.

  3. Rooting Connections in Collective Care: Relationships built on care and mutual respect can lead to lasting, impactful change.

Our Commitment to Solidarity

At BFN, we understand the critical need for philanthropy to show up in solidarity—not as a savior but as a partner. Through thoughtful programs and intentional relationship-building, we aim to reimagine what it means to serve Black communities meaningfully and authentically.
