Grantmakers Impacting Public Health in Black Communities

The Black Funders Network of the Bay Area conducted a landscape analysis to develop a foundational understanding of the grantmakers impacting public health in Black communities. Utilizing Candid’s Foundation Directory as a resource, we looked at impact across the Bay Area (9 counties), the Sacramento Region (6 counties), and the Central Valley (8 counties).

This information is designed to provide a baseline for current and future actions to support public health investments in the health of the Greater Bay Area Black Community. This also builds from the strength of our March 2026 program titled "Pearls of Wisdom: Women Advancing Public Health in Black Communities," which we will reflect on in our April newsletter.

Methodology

The keyword function was utilized to hone in on grants that specifically name Black or African diasporic populations as the constituency. This data analysis examines funding and investments impacting Black communities across the Greater Bay Area.

Findings should be considered a starting point for ongoing conversations about funding health. It represents only grants voluntarily reported to Candid and may undercount actual investments in Black health equity outcomes.
